Youth Art Lab – Upcycling Project × Cross Clothe(2023)

This community art event, themed around "Saidaiji × Art & Fashion Design × Upcycling," was held with support from the Fukutake Education Promotion Foundation. Led by artist Misato Kubo, the project was co-hosted by Minna no Gekijou Okayama and Saidaiji Community Center. The initiative aimed to address SDG Goal 12: "Responsible Consumption and Production," focusing on shifting awareness and actions towards sustainable practices.

The project involved repurposing fabric waste from apparel companies into petal kits, transforming them into decorative elements for art installations. Rather than recycling, the focus was on adding design value through upcycling. The petal-making workshops were open to all ages, with participants creating petals at home using the provided kits.

The culmination of the project took place on October 8, 2023, coinciding with the regular Retro Marche in Saidaiji. The event featured the "Let's Learn While Playing in Saidaiji" program, including a concert by aspiring childcare workers from Jujitsu Junior College and performances by Seika Yamashita. The venue was filled with a warm and welcoming atmosphere. Artworks made from fabric scraps and kimono remnants adorned the space, and workshops using leftover materials were conducted. Additionally, a children's secondhand clothing exchange was held, providing an opportunity for families to engage with art and learn about SDGs in a fun and interactive way.
